HARBOUR LINE CHRONICLES!?!

ALMOST ALL OF US TAKE TRAINS, ALL DAY EVERY DAY. AND ALSO THAT MUMBAI IS KNOWN FOR ITS LOCALS [MORE SPECIFICALLY THE “I WILL KILL YOU CROWD”].

NAVI MUMBAI IS LIKE AN “EXTRA-ADD ON ” TO THE MUMBAI AS IF IT WAS SQUEEZED OUT OF IT AND PLACED IN HERE. WE HAVE THE HARBOUR LINE HERE, WHICH IS NO LESS PATHETIC THAN THE MUMBAI LOCALS; LIKE JUST THAT THE TRAINS HERE DON’T HAVE FANTASTIC SPARKLY COLORS ON THEM NOR DO THEY LOOK ANY NEW. SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE ALL THE OLD UNUSED TRAINS FROM MUMBAI WERE DROPPED IN HERE.

ANYWAYS THE THING ABOUT THESE TRAINS BE IT MUMBAI OR NAVI MUMBAI IS ITS CROWD.NOW THERE ARE THREE CATEGORIES OF TRAVELLERS HERE- “THE CST SIDE WALE LOG”, “THE NAVI-MUMBAI ME HI SADNE WALE LOG”, “THE etc PLACES JAANE WALA CROWD”. AGAIN THERE ARE TWO CLASSES OF PEOPLE TRAVELLING AS WELL- THE “MAR JAAYENGE PAR SECOND CLASS ME HI JAAYENGE” PEOPLE LIKE ME [WE MAY DIE BUT STILL TRAVEL BY THE SECOND CLASS ONLY PEOPLE LIKE ME] AND THE ELITE “FIRST CLASS ” TRAVELLERS. YOU MIGHT SOMETIMES TEND TO CONSIDER YOURSELVES DOWN-MARKET ALSO AS COMPARED TO THEM [JUST FOR A SECOND ONLY THOUGH] BUT STILL MANAGE TO SURVIVE IT LOOKING AT YOUR BROKE “FIRST CLASS” FRIENDS.

NOW MY TRAIN JOURNEY IS HARDLY LIMITED TO TWO STATIONS. BUT I LOOK FORWARD TO IT EVERY DAY. IF YOU ARE A KEEN OBSERVER AND LIKE TO OBSERVE PEOPLE ,THEIR LIFESTYLE AND BEHAVIOUR MAYBE YOU WILL GET WHAT I’M SAYING. YOU MAY ENCOUNTER LIKE A THOUSAND PEOPLE EVERYDAY, SOMETIMES THE FACES GET REPEATED AND GROW FAMILIAR OVER TIME[JUST A SMILE-EXCHANGE LEVEL FAMILIAR].

THESE TRAINS HARDLY EVER COME EMPTY , MOSTLY FULL OF LIFE, LIFE FROM VARIOUS DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE. MY EVERYDAY ENCOUNTERS INCLUDE THE LADY WHO WILL ALWAYS SQUAT BY THE ENTRANCE AND NOT SHIFT NO MATTER WHAT. SOME OTHERS WOULD CARRY HEAVY SUITCASES AND SACKS AND WILL MAKE SURE TO KEEP IT ON YOUR FOOT TILL YOU LEAVE[I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THEY MANAGE TO DO IT. I DONT EVEN MANAGE TO GET IN AND OUT WITH MY BAGPACK . THE OTHER DAY I LOST MY WINDSHEATER TO THE GRUESOME VILLIANS OF THE TRAIN MOB. IT IS STILL DEARLY REMEMBERED.]

NO MATTER WHAT, YOU CAN ALWAYS EXPECT ONE FISHER WOMEN TRYING TO SELL THINGS AND BARGAIN IN AMIDST THE CROWD.[IT CAN GET A BIT TERRIFYING IF YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN LIKE ME. ONCE I ENCOUNTERED A BASKET FULL OF TINY LITTLE LIVE CRABS AND I SWEAR I DIDN’T STOP HANGING FROM THE HANDLE TILL MY STOP ARRIVED IN THE FEAR THAT IT MIGHT GET INTO MY PANTS].

SOME PECULIAR WOMEN ALSO COME IN HERE. SOME WITH FOREHEADS SMEARED OF ASH AND CRIMSON POWDER[THOUGH I’M FROM SOUTH-INDIA, IT STILL SCARES ME.] , WITH A HEAD FULL OF OIL, VISIBLY TRICKLING DOWN THE FACE, ONE AUNTY YELLING INTO HER OLD NOKIA HANDSET HOLDING IT UPSIDE DOWN AND REVERSE TO WORK SOME MAGIC OUT OF THAT POOR FELLOW.

HERE COMES MY FAVOURITE PART, I LIKE MOST COLLEGE YOUNG CROWD LIKE TO HANG BY THE DOOR, FEELING THE STRONG WIND WITH A SCENIC VIEW BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THAT OFFICE GOING FEMALE WHO WILL NOT LET ME STAND THERE AND ENJOY MYSELF.THEN IS WHEN WE GET INTO A COLD WAR.

SAY WHATEVER….I STILL LOVE THOSE 10 MINUTES OF TRAVEL AND LOOK FORWARD TO IT EVERY DAY πŸ™‚
